Cancun - Xcaret July 21, 2010

Once again we are picked up at our hotel at 7:30 in the morning. This time to go to Xcaret (and after hearing very many pronounciations I have decided on ish-car-ret). It was almost a couple of hours to get there, most of which I think I spent sleeping. We were on a rather large charter bus, so at least it was pretty comfy. When we got close we got the most confusing directions of the entire trip. Instead of saying everything in spanish and then english, he would do have the sentence in spanish, then switch to english, then switch back to spanish and finish the sentence, then go back to english to finish the sentence. It was very difficult to follow. But as soon as we got to the park we just took off on our own.

We tried to use the map to plan out our day, but that went straight into the garbage as soon as we got there. After finding our lockers and putting everything away we picked up our snorkle gear and life jackets and headed to the underground river. And once again it was freezing when we got in. We still enjoyed the river. Most of it was underground and too dark to see under the water, so we didn't use the snorkles at all. The downside to the river, you start on one side of the park and stop at the other side, a ten minute walk from your locker. But we also came out right at the beach. So we parked it in the Caribbean for awhile.

The rest of the day is getting jumbled in my head...but I know we saw the jaguar, monkeys, deer, and tapirs. We also walked through the Mayan village. The most interesting part of that was the cemetary. It's built on 7 tiered circles and every grave is decorated, elaborately. Everything is a symbol, even the number of steps up the side of the hill. We were a little concerned when we came upon a grave that had a hole with a ladder leading down into the ground. I can only come up with one thing that was symbolic of. Let's hope not. We went to the orchid greenhouse and rode the paradise river boat. That was nice and relaxing, as they asked that no one talk while on the ride. We eventually wound back up at the beach, too hot to do anything else. We spent a couple of hours in the water then headed back to get our things and change clothes.

After gift shop shopping we went to the dinner show. Our dinner was a hotdog, some doritos, and popcorn, but it worked. The show was a combination of dances, games, theater, and live music. It was a fantastic show. When the show was over we made our way back to our bus. We didn't get back to the hotel til after 11. So we packed some things and crashed.

The next morning was just wake up, go to the airport, get on a plane and fly home. And life since then has just been daydreams of crystal clear water, pesos, underground rivers, and brightly colored parrots.

Adios!
